Activity, Sport and Art Department

Compassion in Action Activity, Sport and Art Department’s goal of this soccer tournament is to encourage the youth of Newark to be involved in sports rather than crime. Soccer is a sport that brings all types of individuals together and creates unity within a community. Newark has been known as one of the most dangerous cities in New Jersey for much of its recent history. In 2014 alone, there were 3,500 cases of violent crime and 112 murders in Newark (City-Data). We hope that with this tournament we can help the community by getting young people involved in soccer instead of crime. It has been proven that High School athletes are less likely to engage in criminal activity as adults than those who do not participate in sports. (University of Michigan). Using that model, we hope that this tournament can do the same for the youth of Newark.
